Father Szalay was the parish priest in Spearfish for many years. His interests were esoteric, so the collection is extensive. Father Szalay had a great interest in maps, and the collection includes more than 700 maps, many from the western United States. The collection also includes Japanese silk paintings, railroad photographs, Russell and Remington prints, prints of birds, as well as bird books and many personal notes on historical aspects of Spearfish.
