Newspapers (Miscellaneous Collections)

The Case Library contains copies of more than 100 different newspapers. Many of the newspapers are from the Black Hills area. The library has all but 13 issues of The Walrus, a weekly newspaper printed for about five years at Igloo. There is a complete file of the Queen City Mail, and the library also has the only edition of the Spearfish Valley Gazette - four pages printed on May 7, 1881. Included in the newspaper collection are numerous tribal newspapers such as Lakota Eyapaha, Native Times, and The Oglala War Cry.

The Walrus was sponsored by the Civilian Welfare Fund Council for the employees of Black Hills Ordnance Depot, Igloo, S.D. All material published in the newspaper had to be cleared through the Public Information Officer of Black Hills Ordnance Depot.
