Biographical Note

Dr. James Edward Gillihan served as the South Dakota Cultural Preservation Director from 1972-1978. Prior to that he spent two years as the Director of the W.H. Over Dakota Museum in Vermillion. Gillihan immersed himself in Plains Culture and gained the respect of the Elders. He was adopted into the Yankton tribe as the son of Joe Rockboy who'd served as an advisor to the museum. He was also adopted into the Rosebud tribe. In 1991 he was a guest curator and lecturer at Crazy Horse Memorial Indian Museum. "The little people of the Dakota Sioux" is a topic about which he spoke on several occasions. This paper is available in the papers of the 14th Dakota History Conference, 1982.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes a very detailed timeline of American Indian cultures, issues and histories of primarily South Dakota tribes, but also other various tribes throughout the US as well. Big topics throughout this collection are Crazy Horse, AIM, Black Hills Claim, Wounded Knee 1890 and 1973, and other contemporary issues throughout history.
