Organizational History

National forests first came into existence in the 1890s, when Congress passed multiple laws pertaining to the creation and reserving of what were considered public domain lands. The Organic Act of 1897 clarified the purpose of the reserves, which was "to improve and protect the forest within the reservation, or for the purpose of securing favorable conditions of water flows, and to furnish a continuous supply of timber for... citizens of the United States." The Forest Service manages these lands for uses including mining, recreation activities, range/grazing, and wildlife. Headquarters for the Black Hills National Forest are located in Custer, with ranger districts in Spearfish, Rapid City, and Sundance, Wyoming.

The collection includes material on deposit from the Custer and Spearfish forest service offices.

Scope and Contents

The Black Hills National Forest Historical Collection comes from two separate Forest Service offices, the Custer office and the Spearfish office, with the bulk of the materials originating from Custer. Within these two offices, the collection is arranged in the following series: Artifacts, Audiovisual/Multimedia Materials, Manuscript Materials, Oversized Materials, and Photographic Materials. These series are divided into various subseries as needed and noted below in the inventory. Types of material include books, print documents, audio and video recordings, film reels, CDs and DVDs. The collection includes the original accession from 2005 and two later accessions (2015, 2016) listed separately in the inventories below.

The 2015 and 2016 accessions contains materials from both offices not physically integrated within the earlier collections, though intellectually integrated within the finding aid.

Folders are arranged in Forest Service filing code order within series and subseries. Books in the collection may be browsed using the E. Y. Berry Library catalog.

Acquisition Information

Materials were received and are held on deposit from the Forest Service in 2005, as part of a long-term curatorial agreement. New accessions were received and held in 2015-2016.
