Matthews Opera House Collection*
This collection consists of 4.5 linear feet of material related to the Matthews Opera House and the Spearfish Arts Center. Types of material included are: newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, fliers, and posters. The material is dated from 1923-2012. The Matthews Opera House was built by local Wyoming cattle rancher, Thomas Matthews and opened December 3, 1906. Due to growing popularity of "moving pictures" it closed as a venue for live theater in 1919. During the 1920s it opened again as the Princess Theater showing movies. In the 1930s the Princess Theater moved out and the Opera House was used for a variety of activities such as a basketball court, shooting gallery, and dance hall. Students from Black Hills State University made a couple of attempts to reopen the Opera House as a venue for live theater. First was during the summers of 1956 and 1957 and the second was in 1966. In the 1980s the Downtown Spearfish Association decided that restoring the Matthews Opera House was a worthy endeavor. The building was leased from the Kelly Family, owners of the property and restoration began in 1989. Restoration was completed in time for the centennial of the Opera House in 2006.
