History of Organization
The Queen City Club of Lawrence County Extension Organization began in September 1936 at the home of Mrs. W. O. Fillmore in Spearfish, SD. Meetings were held twice per month with the exception of November and December and the club adjourned during July and August. The club began sponsoring a 4-H Club in 1940 and sent two girls to camp whom otherwise would not have been able to afford the expenses of attending. An annual picnic was held for the members and their families. The members attended to the sick, bereaved, new mothers, and members preparing to leave the community. The club also held an annual Christmas party. During the war, the group assisted the Red Cross with serving and knitting. Recipients of cash donations made by the club included the Spearfish Youth Recreation Program, Service Club, Pennies for Friendship Fund, Susan Z. Wilder Fund, Infantile Paralysis Fund, Red Cross, Hot Lunch Program, Lawrence County Nursing Fund, and gifts for home agents. Clothing was donated to people in countries afflicted by the war and a family in Spearfish who lost their belongings to a fire. The club lasted until 1982.
