Biographical Note

Had to retire 25 years before he expected to due to health problems. This left him much free time on his hands. During the years 1923-1925 he lived in New Haven, Conn., where he sold oil and gasoline during the day to retailers and attended Yale at night. He joined the Navy and decided to become a hospital apprentice. Even though he had no education before that, and had failed the entrance examination, they let him have a trial period of six months. By the time graduation came, he was 4th in a class of more than 60 students and had an average of 98%.

He became a strong advocate of birth control after having observed and done some independent thinking.

In his will George C. Custer left a legacy to ARROW for the establishment of the Dr. George C. Custer and Emily Henrietta Custer Library. The Library would contain Native American materials available for reference, study, and research. In 1986 Black Hills State University was chosen to establish and maintain this library.
