Children´s Award Books

Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children
Presented once every three years by the National Council of Teachers of English, to a poet in recognition of an entire body of poetry work for children.

Coretta Scott King Award
Presented annually by the Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table to an African American author and illustrator for the most distinguished portrayal of African American experience in literature for children.

The John Newbery Medal
Presented annually to an American author for the most distinguished contribution to children´s literature published in the previous year.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal
Presented once every three years to an author or illustrator published in the United States, whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children
Presented annually by the National Council of Teachers of English to one American book demonstrating excellence in the writing of nonfiction, published in the previous year.

Pura Belpre Award
Presented to Latino writers and illustrators whose work best exemplify authentic cultural experiences in children´s works of literature.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal
Presented annually to an American illustrator for the most distinguished American picture book for children published in the preious year.

South Dakota Children´s Book Awards: Prairie Bud and Prairie Pasque Awards
Presented annually to authors by the South Dakota Library Association. Prairie Bud winners are determined by South Dakota kindergarten, first and second grade students. Prairie Pasque winners are determined by South Dakota third, fourth and fifth grade students.

Young Adult Award Books

Alex Awards
Presented annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, published in the previous year.

Margaret A. Edwards Award
Presented annually to an author and a specific work for significant and lasting contribution to writing for teens.

Michael L. Printz Award
Presented annually to an author and a specific work exemplifying excellence in literature written for young adults, published in the previous year.
